Illegal Gun Possession Results in 5 Year Prison Sentence

District Attorney Hoovler Announces Prison Sentence in Newburgh Gun Case

Romaine Calhoun Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

Defendant Previously Pled Guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Monday, January 6, 2025, Romaine Calhoun, age 21, of Newburgh, was sentenced before the Honorable Craig Stephen Brown in the Orange County Court to five (5) years in prison to be followed by three (3) years of post-release supervision in connection with his previous guilty plea to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

As alleged in documents filed and statements made in court, on August 6, 2024 at approximately 12:40 p.m., members of the New York State Police observed a vehicle commit various Vehicle and Traffic Law violations in the area of South William Street in the City of Newburgh.  When the troopers pulled the vehicle over they observed Calhoun in the passenger seat.  After discovering that neither the driver nor Calhoun had a valid license, the vehicle was impounded.  During an inventory search of the vehicle, a loaded .38 caliber revolver was recovered from under the seat Calhoun was occupying.  At the plea proceedings, Calhoun admitted to attempting to possess the loaded firearm.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the New York State Police for their investigation which led to the arrest of Calhoun.

“The illegal possession of firearms goes hand-in-hand with other violent crimes perpetrated in Orange County,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “My Office, together with our law enforcement partners, will continue to prioritize taking illegal guns and the criminals who possess them off of our streets.  I commend the proactive policing by the New York State Police that ensured this offender would be held accountable for his crimes.”

The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Richard Giordano.

This criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
