District Attorney Hoovler Announces Prison Sentence for New Jersey Man for Port Jervis Robbery
Douglas Hill Pled Guilty to Robbery in the Second Degree
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Douglas Hill, 29, of Newton, New Jersey, was sentenced in Orange County Court to six (6) years in prison to be followed by five (5) years post-release supervision relative to his guilty plea to Robbery in the Second Degree.
As alleged in documents filed and statements made in court, at 3:45 a.m. on December 30, 2023, Hill and a co-defendant approached an individual on Ball Street in the City of Port Jervis, displayed handguns and forcibly stole property from the victim including a laptop, jewelry and a wallet. After a police investigation which included review of surveillance video and the execution of a judicially-authorized search warrant, the proceeds of the robbery were recovered at Hill’s residence in New Jersey. At the plea proceedings, Hill admitted to forcibly stealing property from the victim and during the course of the robbery displaying what appeared to be a firearm. The co-defendant previously pled guilty and was sentenced to prison.
District Attorney Hoovler thanked the City of Port Jervis Police Department for their investigation which led to the arrest of Hill. District Attorney Hoovler also thanked the Newton (NJ) Police Department and Sussex County (NJ) Prosecutor’s Office for their assistance during the investigation.
“We will continue to relentlessly pursue violent criminals who illegally wield, threaten and use dangerous firearms,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “While I have always and will continue to support the safe and legal possession of firearms by those licensed to do so, the use of these weapons by criminalsfuels the violence we see every day. We must counter such illegal possession by careful policing and committed prosecution. I thank all of the law enforcement agencies, state, local and across state lines who together ensured that these offenders were brought to justice.”
The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Mangold.
A criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
